Family Learning Week 2009

27th September – 3rd October 2009

mum dad and son at family learning day.

Family Learning Week is a national awareness campaign that raises awareness of the importance and scope of family learning to potential participants, practitioners and key influencers.

The first national Family Learning Day was during Adult Learners' Week in 1997. This became Family Learning Weekend in 1999, Family Learning Week in 2004 and Family Learning month for 2008. In 2009 we've gone back to a Week long campaign which takes place just before the school mid term break.

Family Learning Week aims to strengthen communities and to create more opportunities for the family to learn together, by encouraging organisations to offer special family learning events during the campaign times.

Families come in all shapes and sizes and we want to encourage all families, even those without children to get involved.  We believe that families are those people who care for, look out for and want the best for each other, so no matter the size or shape of a family there’s something for everyone.

How can you get involved?

Well if you are organising any events for families that takes place during the month that provide the opportunity for families to learn together, it could become be part of Family Learning Week.

Who could be involved?

Any organisation involved in learning provision or work with families can benefit from involvement in Family Learning Week.  We actively work with staff in:

    * Local authorities
    * Voluntary organisations
    * Museums, galleries and arts venues
    * Libraries
    * Sports clubs, centres and organisations
    * Schools, colleges and universities
    * Youth groups

to reach out to people through their family and encourage them to get involved.

Benefits of Involvement

If you seriously want to make a difference to people’s lives then involvement in Family Learning Week can:

    * Build new relationships with local families and communities
    * Raise the profile of your organisation within the community
    * Facilitate the development of new partnerships with other agencies and organisations
    * Help you to reach “hard to reach” families
    * Allow you to signpost further learning opportunities.

What a wonderful way to learn with your family. I should have brought my mum too, she would have had a ball.
